Hans Christian Andersen

In Spring 2012 we decided to look at the works of famous children's author Hans Christian Andersen. The main focus were on three of his works:

The Emperor's New Clothes: This is where we looked at the poem written by Roald Dahl. The children learnt this poem and recited it at the presentation morning, with each of the characters depicted on stage and acting out the poem.

Thumbelina and The Ugly Duckling: Both of these were potted performances of Andersen's work, with a script adapted by a member of Union Theatre.

Throughout the workshops a key focus was voice and voice projection, as this an essential attribute when performing. With no microphones it is important for everyone to be heard and this was a central element of the workshops. Alongside this, the children also learnt music from these stories, including Inch Worm, Thumbelina and Ugly Duckling, as well as learning about the importance of marketing and promoting a show through designing posters and programmes.

Union Theatre's make up artist also came along to run a workshop, where each of the children had the opportunity to develop their skills and Union Theatre's backstage team ran a workshops on set design. These pieces of design work were featured in the end of term performance for the parents.
